Monday morning was sunny and cool. A number of local candidates filed Friday and Monday to insure primaries for Democrats and Republicans. We appreciate those who have filed. They are willing to do something toward better government and are ready to serve. A democracy wouldn't be of much value if its citizens weren't willing to offer for office. Salvadoran army soldiers killed at least 20 people early Sunday in San Salvador in what government called raids on guerrilla hideouts followed by fighting. Relatives of many victims called it an unprovoked massacre. John McEnroe beat Jimmy Connors 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 to win the U. S Pro Indoor Tennis Championship in Philadelphia. Last Sunday was the last day for Sunday mail to be put in the boxes at the Tryon Post Office. The letters that you wrote didn’t mean anything. The issue was decided in Asheville on Dec. 17th — that was the date the letter was written that was put into the boxes here on Jan. 10th. Senate redistricting on Thursday, Feb. 4th at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the State Legislative Building in Raleigh. This hearing is for citizen input as to how the district lines should be drawn. A copy of the various plans are on file at the Clerk of Superior Court office in Columbus and in every county in North Carolina. For Commissioner Geoffrey M. Tennant Geoffrey M. Tennant of Peniel Road, Columbus filed for County Commissioner Friday afternoon at the Polk County Election Board office. Mr. Tennant is a Democrat. David Langford of Carpenter Heights, Landrum, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Janet Ann, to Donald Lee Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Smith of Rt. 3, Landrum. Both are graduates of Landrum High School. Miss Langford is employed by Pearle Vision Center, Westgate, Spartanburg Mr. Smith is employed by Holmberg Electronics, Inman. The wedding is planned for March 6 at the home of her aunt and uncle, Mr and Mrs. W. Friday afternoon Geoffrey Tennant filed as a Democrat for the Polk County Commissioners and filing for the Tryon School Board were B.C. Corbett and Margaret P. Pittman. Monday morning Clifford Stott and Phillip Walker filed for County Commissioner as Republicans and Charles McKaig and Henry Huntsinger filed for County Commissioner as Democrats. Preston White filed for the Polk County Soil and Water Conservation Board.
